Celebrating the World

We have been learning about the country of Tonga.

In Room 8 we learnt that they have a traditional dance and art. We also learnt that the tapa cloth is called Ngatu and its patterns are based on nature. Our favourite thing we learned was the lullaby 'Ana Latu', it is a lullaby about two people being in love.  Here is the version we learnt.

On Tuesday we celebrated the cultures of the world by coming in traditional dress of our own culture. We started the day with mihi whakatau to welcome the new students to the school. After we showed off our traditional dress in a school parade.
It was so special to celebrate this day.

What do you know about the country of Tonga?

ASB GetWise Visit

On Thursday we had Jeff in the class from ASB GetWise which focuses on financial literacy for children. We talked about identifying needs and wants and learning to save. Learning these things at a young age can help set us up for the future.

All Saints Day

All Saints Day Celebration

On Friday the 30th of October, we celebrated All Saints Day. It is usually celebrated on 1st November and it is all about pray to the saints and for all those we know who have passed. We dressed up as a Saint such as St Therese of Lisieux, St Francis of Assisi, Euphrasie Barbier, St Aidan, and St Christopher, St Joseph. We went outside and played rob the nest, cat and mouse with the parachute. We also drew what a Saint was like and a place that made us happy. We felt prayerful, happy, and chill because of the day.

What do you know about All Saints Day?

See the photos below of our celebration day.

International Evening Preparation- Brazil!

We have been learning about Brazil because it is our International Evening country focus that we will be sharing in Week 6. Each class is focusing on one/two countries as we are bringing the world to NBC.

So far we have looked at researching about the food, the Amazon Rainforest, native animals and music. We were even lucky enough to have Ana (Tristan's Mum) to come and talk to us about her experiences and knowledge being from there.

We look forward to learning more to share in Week 6!

Softball

On Wednesday afternoons we are learning to play Softball. Last week we started with learning how to catch and using getting used to the glove. This week we began to have a go at batting. We learnt to stand with our feet steady straight on to the ball, our hands together at the bottom of the bat and from our shoulder through making a swing. We had some fantastic hits over the fielders!

Educational Minecraft

Today we were lucky to have Howard in to show us the wonders that the educational version of Minecraft has to offer. We had challenges to complete using coordinates, Māori language, spotting the wonders of the world, and many more.

Room 8 Calendar Art

Here is our art inspired by the artist Wassily Kandinsky.

Softball

We are lucky enough this term to be learn some softball. We first learned how to run around the diamond in the correct direction, then we learned how to throw and catch the ball. We practiced by ourselves, seeing how many claps we could do before catching the ball. Then we worked in pairs throwing and catching with cones and gloves. Check out how we went in our first session.

Tornadoes

For writing we have been learning how to write explanations. This week we had our own choice of topics to write about; the water cycle, how seeds grow,  the butterfly cycle and tornadoes. The majority of the class chose to write about Tornadoes. We decided to do the tornado in a bottle experiment to see how tornadoes are formed. See below to check out our tornado in a bottle experiment.
